Yet another piece of weirdness in the docs

In the Start 20 series Reference Guide page 41 it says:

"If you want to keep your personal information and settings, you
should perform a full backup of your Start before you reset the
device."

But on the TT web site at
http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/ans...tail/a_id/3171 it says:

"Backing up your device is currently not possible for the following
navigation devices:
GO 1000 series, GO LIVE 800 series, Via series, Start 20 series, Blue
& Me TomTom 2 LIVE, Sony XNV"

So the Guide suggest backing up, the web page says, can't be done!

WTF?

It looks like the only way you can back it up is to put it on your
windscreen and drive a few miles in reverse.

Perhaps Googling or looking on some forums (i.e., not this newsgroup)
might turn up a hack or some software that can do it. Good luck.

I bet the original was written well before the problem with backing up
showed up as the changed the app that does the backing up, and has
just been carried over into the manual for those later ones that cant be
backed up currently, with someone not being careful to amend the pdf.

I assume that the word CURRENTLY on the web site means
that they do plan to make backing it up possible in the future
with a change to the app running in the PC.

Thats one advantage of the separate memory card that some of the
other models have, you can back it up using almost anything on the PC.

Also an interesting commentary on checking user reviews online before
buying if that downside with the Start 20 didnt show up in those.

I wouldnt worry about it, the most you can lose is your added favorites etc.

I'd try the latest one. It'll soon tell you if it cant see the Start 20.

Thanks Rod. I'm really quite pleased with my purchase, because let's
face it £107 isn't much these days. Only about a sixth of what I pay
for 1000 litres of heating oil, for example. It's nifty the way you
can make a wrong turn and it fetches you back on the correct route.
I'm sure the journey down to Leominster will be a lot easier than with
just the map book and road signs.

Yes, it is "Nifty" but if it tells you to "Turn around when possible" it is
advisable to do so. A year or so ago when I was driving in France I took a
wrong turn. I realised immediately that I had done so and Tom Tom told me to
turn around when possible. Being a genius I ignored the warning on the basis
that it would recompute the route. Well, it did so and I found myself
driving on narrow roads through several forests and through hamlets where
people looked at the car as if they had never seen one before. I was
extremely relieved when I got on to an identifiable major road, which I knew
would take me on to my destination!

Yeah, I've had no regrets about mine either. Wouldnt do without it,
but then I use it for yard sales every week and they are a complete
pain in the arse done manually, or even using just google maps.

I paid about that for mine, but I havent used heating oil for 40 years now.

Yeah, and very convenient when you know a better route yourself too.

Mine does use the higher traffic routes, when I know that one of the
slightly longer routes is actually better. But then mine isnt one of the
tomtoms that can use user's reported transit times to route using those.

Yeah, particularly in major citys that you arent familiar with. I did lots
of that in the pre satnav days and would never do it again voluntarily.
I mostly drive with only me in the car and so map books arent convenient.

One of my mates that swears by his satnav says that the real advantage
of them is that they stop lots of arguments when someone else is navigating.

It does help if you know the local area, which is why I still need to
"test" it on a completely new journey to see whether I get 'led up the
garden path' so to speak. Yesterday, for instance, I drove to my local
town and I just knew it would pick the direct route! Well, the direct
route is fine most of the time during the day. But it means crossing
the A17 Spalding to King's Lynn road and in the rush hour, especially
on Fridays, you can sit at the junction for TEN minutes before there's
a safe gap. So I always make a slight detour, avoid the A17 and never
have to wait at all. The sat nav doesn't know this trick. But on a
longer journey into the unknown I'll be at its mercy.
