Garmin and Magellan can't be far behind. What a bummer.

As the name Magellan implies, and Garmin's history, they are both heavily
into marine navigation. For that market handhelds are not so proscribed, so
are likely to continue. I would expect that to spill over into their satnav
markets too.

This is a troll, right? THREE freakin' sentences from a self-proclaimed
digital goddess announcing that the manufacturer of a so-so GPS is
leaving the market (or is it forced out by superior products) and you
guys are announcing the end of the world?

Where's Chicken Little and my hatchet?

Looking back-- have you found sarcasm and being demeaning toward others
to be effective techniques for dealing with people?

Just sayin'...

No, not a troll (at least from me 'Andrew'). I've followed this forum
for several years, and of course I might have missed something, but I
don't recall anyone posting (I don't need a flood of 'yes i Dids')
indicating this fact about Tom-Tom before (yes, I know this is Garmin).
And it's not just Kim (the so-called Digital Goddess' who said it, but
a few Google with I made point up a number of others. For example,
(and, alas, stand alone GPS is #1 in this list):

http://www.clarkhoward.com/news/clar...0-years/nFRZ8/
..

Point is perhaps someone who might not know would appreciate a heads up
on this sentiment, that's all.

After all, we just went through the spell of how long are life time maps
going to be supported? Well, if you're getting out of the business,
perhaps not long at all!

Still room for two strong players.

just sayin' or is there a message between the lines?
No sarcasm intended and *I'm Dutch* demeaning is a word too difficult for
me.

Back to intentions:
- Back in the old days, cars didnt have GPS on board.
- When GPS was invented, drivers wanted them in their existing cars.
- So they bought stuff like Tom-Tom equipment
- Car manufacturers, like anyone, like to sell addons
- Therefore, one can/could expect manufacturers to take their share of the
market and design cars with built-in GPS systems, so they can sell their
cars at a higher price

Hence..."Dutch GPS maker TomTom said last month that it would stop making
standalone navigation units and concentrate instead on built-in systems for
cars and apps for smartphones." is something like an open door.

Installed GPS' in new cars is an option, and overpriced.
Due to the economy, new car sales are down.
There are more older cars on the road than new ones and they don't have
GPS installed in their cars.
There will always be a market for aftermarket GPS'.
More people buy Garmins and Magellans than TomToms.

Smartphones? Why would I want to spend $50/month in order to use the GPS
feature of a phone?
