I see TomTom is now offering devices with Lifetime maps and traffic such as
http://tinyurl.com/3xvjk7x and $230 for a TTS device with lifetime maps of
North America and Europe sounds like a fabulous deal. But I can't discover
anywhere the Ts&Cs for this offer.

Does anyone know whether this "Lifetime" is of the device or the buyer or
of TomTom N.V.?

Thats never spelt out. Same with lifetime hardware warrantys too.

The short story is that they mean of the hardware, but it also
obviously means the lifetime of TomTom themselves too.

Well, as a consumer customer I believe I have a right to know the terms of
any contract to which I am party (or alternatively a right to have it
interpreted in a manner most favourable to me and adverse to the writer.)

I asked Amazon and they replied promptly that they didn't know and I should
ask TomTom. So I've done that and I await some response from the Dutchmen.

Yes, but its clearly implied that its the lifetime of the physical
device with the other obvious qualification that if TomTom NV
has gone, there is no way it can honour any warranty at all.

Tho in plenty of jurisdictions, the warranty on the device still
working is provided by the seller, not the manufacturer. If the
manufacturer no longer exists and it isnt feasible for the seller
to get the device repaired or replaced, the buyer is legally
entitled to a full refund of the amount that was paid.

I wonder whether anyone else took up that amazing offer? Amazon's price for
that XXL 540TM World Traveler (Europe and North America) with Lifetime
Traffic and Maps has since risen from $230 to $283.

TomTom has confirmed to me that the advertised "lifetime" is that of the
device (or, of course, of TomTom NV, whichever ends the sooner!).
