I am using TomTom Go version 3 and I know that even with subscription to map
updates these maps are several months behind the real state of the roads. Is
Garmin or any other better in this respect?

TomTom are in the process of releasing the 840 series.
A delay of 'several months' is not unreasonable - satnav producers use maps
provided by TeleAtlas or some other similar supplier.

It would be nice if TomTom or someone else came up with better DIY map
update for those not so simple cases. For example if I am driving on a new
road why not allow me to press a button "copy your route" which would
capture into the device where I am driving? Or to have a sophisticated
graphic map editing feature online.

That certainly is on the right lines. It seems quite up to date, at least
here in Cambridge, even a guided bus which is not yet in service is there.
Unfortunately map updates are probably quite an important source of revenue
for SatNav manufacturers and so they may not be too keen on the idea.

GPS manufacturers must understand that you can buy a good gps for less
than $100. They have altready invested in the cost of map upgrades. IMO,
it would seem to me that folks would weigh the cost of the new gps with
the cost of a map upgrade. I could sell 4x the number of upgrades if the
cost were less than $40. Do the math.
