I have a generic BT GSP dongle, and I would ike to use it with a laptop
whilst in OZ shortly to prepare routes, etc.

I am looking to invest in something similar to AutoRoute that will cover OZ,
but cannot seem to find anything...

I am not looking for something free and with limited functionality, but
prefer something with good and "official" maps (whatever that meens).

Garmin Mobile PC £65 + MapSource Australia
Garmin World Map - shows major Highways and Cities only £50
Garmin City Navigator Australia and New Zealand £128

You'd be better off buying a satnav for that region when you get there
at these prices.

Thanks for the pointers. I have been happily using TomTom 720 for a few
years now and intend to take it with me. I just thought that since I bring
my netbook with me anyway then it would be nice to be able to plan my way on
a 10" scree rather than a 5" one.

Never used a Garmin before - are the above simply a PC-based UI using the
standard Garmin maps?

Yes.

TBH I'm not sure what your intended use is. However if what you want is
to use a SatNav in the car and to have a PC Application that you can use
to create routes and export them to the SatNav then with a Garmin you
don't need to buy a separate application. When you get a Garmin map
package you also get Garmin RoadTrip with the package (or you can
download it from the Garmin website once you have registered your map
package).

This gives you a full mapping package on your PC which you can use to
plan routes and export to any Garmin GPS, including the handheld units.
In my case that includes my venerable Garmin 12XL which is a "mars bar"
type GPS which just gives a heading to the next feature on the route. It
also includes more recent in-car units.

What RoadTrip doesn't do is connect to a GPS so that your PC can be used
as a SatNav. It's purely a tool used for planning routes. If you want
your PC to be used for navigation then you need to look elsewhere such
as MobilePC. There are also free navigation applications such as GarTrip
that will work with the routes designed in RoadTrip.

Does Garmin produce a PC version of RoadTrip? I thought it was for the Mac
only.

I thought they did, but since I have a Mac and CBA with PC based stuff
anymore, no idea.
