I imagine I am not the only one to receive an e-mail ad from Magellan
suggesting an "upgrade" to a Triton 400, with a $30 discount.

The advantages are supposedly as follows:

* SD card compatibility enables you to upload additional maps and
store thousands of trails
* New user interface offers intuitive menus and friendly keypad
controls
* Trail-tested durability ensures your Triton 400 will handle
changing outdoor conditions
* High-sensitivity GPS finds and maintains your position quickly
* MapSend software used on Meridian and SporTrak models is not
compatible with Triton GPS units

The only one of those that seems attractive is "High-sensitivity GPS
finds and maintains your position quickly." That is something my
Explorist 500 does not do. As far as I know, the other features are
true of the Explorist.

Does anyone here have any personal experience with a Triton?

DON'T DO IT!

My Explorist 500LE crashed and I called the support desk they could
not help me fix my unit and suggested an "UPGRADE" to the Triton 400.
so far i have had nothing but problems with it. i bought my Explorist
NEW and they sent me a refurbished Triton in place of it. and it
SUCKS i have had so much trouble with it i called them again for
help and they could not fix as it turns out it has software issues
and i have to return it to them. I am so Angry i asked for a refund
and they would not because i have had it more then 14 days so i am
trading it for another model and the saga continues.

Thanks for the advice, and I'm sorry to hear of your troubles.

Not long after posting here, I joined a group, something-triton.com, and
asked for opinions there. It was something live five (or more) to one
against.
