it should work just fine. But if you have no plans to see the rest of the
USA or to drive into Canada then the Western Region is just £35 versus £55
for the whole of USA and Canada. BTW, I suggest you choose an American
voice to use while you are there - it just might help remind you to start
off on the right hand side of the road in the mornings.

Thanks for this. I was thinking of buying the USA only map which is
£45. Maybe a stupid question but plugging the Tomtom into the cigar
lighter will not cause any "voltage" issues I take it?

Modern US cars all use 12V -ve chassis just like in Europe. But if you
ride in either a classic car or a truck (lorry) it would be best to ask
respectively about the polarity or the voltage of their electrics.

Thanks Tony. Makes sense to spend £44 (and keep the map!) than pay $10
per day to rental company in USA. I am renting for 12 days, so it is
worth the investment.

G'day,

I have done exactly this with the Tomtom One XL from Australia. I
purchased the US maps, and it worked perfectly. Took a few minutes to
find the satellites, since I had moved several thousand kilometres, but
worked perfectly.

If you have enough space on the Tomtom, you can simply add the maps onto
the device. For me, I added them onto an SD card, which now contains
both the Australian and US maps.

Regards,
Geoff

These days it's not even that - just a power socket that won't work
properly with a cigar/cigarette lighter (both terms are used here in
the USA, thought cigarette lighter is more common).

But before I get too insistent, I'd better admit that I haven't
surveyed cigarette lighters in a significant fraction of cars.

This is what I want to do. I have enough space on the SD card. Is it
straight forward to "put" the map on the card pls?
