Hi All

I hope this is the right place to post, if not I'm sorry and would you
please point me to the right group.

I have a TomTom 720t which I have had for about two years.

When I got it I loaded up home and went to the map warranty and got my
new map update.
Now being a dumb blond I did not back the unit up.

I do not know what went wrong BUT I lost all my stuff on the Tomtom
720t.

I see from the home program I no longer can get the map that I had.

So where can I buy a uk map to down load to my computer and NOT to my
TomTom unit for me to lose again and have to buy a new one.

Also any instruction on how to load onto a 2 gig card

many thanks

Sheila a Dumb Blond

Does the GPS still start-up normally?
Have you tried the hidden reset button? (I have this on my Go700)
Is there a problem doing a backup that you did not complete one? For a long
time I had a problem with backup not completing properly and no backup was
made. I found out that something in the Flash memory had been corrupted. Was
told to treat it like any plug-in flash memory and scan for and repair any
errors.
This is in 'My computer' under the drive letter for your gps. Right click on
the drive letter and select 'Properties'. On the TOOLS tab, Error-checking,
click Check Now...
Click both check boxes to automatically fix system errors and attempt
recovery of bad sectors. Then hit Start.
This is for an XP computer. Other OS's may be different.
I can now make backups normally.

There was one version of TomTom operating program that when you loaded it,
erased all your favorites. I got bitten by that but with backups, is easy to
restore things.

This link will (hopefully) show how to reset your 720:

http://www.tomtom.com/support/soluti...on%22&FID=6965

If not, get to the page from www.tomtom.com via FAQ or Support?

As soon as you get your TomTom working, connect it to your PC using TT Home
and start Windows Explorer (a quick way of doing this is to hold down the
"Windows" key, normally second from left on bottom row of keyboard, and
press the letter "e" (no quote marks). Then create a new folder (in
Windows Explorer click highlight your hard disk (usually Local Disk (C,
click "File" (top left),"New", "Folder" then enter a name (such as TT
Backup). Next, highlight the TomTom folder (something like "E:\TomTom
720" - it all depends upon what name TomTom used, but should be easy to
locate), hold down the Control (Ctrl) key, bottom left) and press "c"
(copy), highlight the new folder you just created on your PC (TT Backup)
then hold down the control key and press "v" (paste). This copies your
ENTIRE TT to the backup folder on your PC so that you can always get back to
a working TT by copying the entire contents of your backup folder back to
your TT root "E:\TomTom 720"? - TomTom Home does NOT create a complete
backup of a TomTom (so is useless).

The following text I saw somewhere might help.
(I used it to add the S.Africa map to the Europe map on my TT One XL.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
"My main gripe is the rather frustrating procedure to add
additional maps which is not sufficiently documented by TomTom (I
had to search a few forums before I figured it out).

I bought the US Western Region map from the tomtom website which
was a 200Mb download, so you would think that a 1Gb SD card would
be sufficient for using it on the TomTom XL...however not so.

The TomTom XL out of the box has a 1GB internal memory which is
shipped totally "full" with the Western Europe map and the TomTom
software itself, so understandably you can't add any maps to the
"core memory". So the solution is to add memory by way of an SD
card, BUT the TomTom CANNOT use an SD card and internal memory at
the same time, so in short if you want to add any additional maps
to this unit you need to purchase an SD card with the capacity
for your additional maps plus 1Gb for the existing map and OS. So
in otherwords you need at least a 2Gb card.

Once you've bought your 2Gb SD card and you have your new map(s)
downloaded to your PC you need to follow the steps below (best to
switch the unit off and on after each step). The whole thing will
probably take you about an hour depending on how many additional
maps you've bought. Make sure you've installed the latest version
of the TomTom Home software on your PC before you begin.

1. Connect the TomTom to your PC (without the SD card inserted)
and "Backup" the unit to your PC using the TomTom Home software
(takes about 20min).

2. Insert your SD card into the TomTom and "Restore" your backup
from the PC back to the unit, again using the TomTom Home
software (takes about 20mins). These first two steps basically
write the contents of the internal memory on to the SD card.

3. Finally click "add maps" in the TomTom Home software on your
PC and hopefully it should take you to a screen showing the
additional map(s) you've bought and downloaded. You can then add
these to the TomTom unit from here.

During use the unit won't automatically switch between your maps,
so in my case when I want to use my US map I need to "switch
over" in the unit preferences. I guess that means I can't plot a
driving route from Liverpool to New York..but then I'm not sure
I'd ever need to . . . . "
----------------------------------------------------------------------

(It may be better to do the backup/restore using a PC copy function
rather than Home's backup/restore.)

Thank you for getting back to me

>Does the GPS still start-up normally?

Yes the GPS does start with no problem now I have got all the software
back

>Have you tried the hidden reset button?

Yes done that

>Is there a problem doing a backup that you did not complete one?

Ha Ha Ha Ha No I have no problem in doing a backup Just did not do
one, come on I'm a woman.

Just to recap, The unit works fine and got all the software on it and
the version says 8.351 my map is the OLD one ( Western Europe
705.1480)that came with the GPS unit BUT as I say I did go to tools
map guarantee and up date it. BUT as I say I lost ALL files on my unit
and that is now my problem I have NOT got that up dated map.
TomTom say I cannot get it because I have had it once.
I will not be travel in Europe so All I want is the UK version of a
Map.

BUT I cannot find anywhere where I can DOWNLOAD AND PAY FOR this to my
computer and NOT update thru TomTom Home.

I do not want to lose it all again.

Ok Ok Ok Dumb blond BACK IT UP yes will do.

One other thing that has come up now I have updated is that the when
TomTom Home loads up it keeps telling me to up date my unit I say yes
and it says Jane Voice cannot be loaded.

I have 160 meg left on my SD card

Hmmmmmmm oh dear .

Hi Maurice

Thank you very much for the info

I have a problem which you might help

Put my SD card in my 720t switched on

Connect to computer yes.

TomTom home started then a box comes up saying "select your navigation
device "hard disk I" "Hard Disk J" well I know that the SD card is I
so select that one.
Application update Required
I click update
Your device is up to date Click back
BUT it shows a error Kate Standard Voice cannot be installed on this
device.

I'm lost now, is this going to happen ever time home starts?

Also STILL not got any where to download ( AND PAY ) for a UK map to
my hard drive.

As far as I know you cannot download map files direct to pc. You
download and install the map file direct to your tomtom using home,
then backup the map file to your pc

Yes - same with TomTomXL.

Perhaps because 'Jane' is a/the default voice, and therefore not
selectable as an option.

Have you tried installing any of the other voices?

It may be worth while posting your 'Jane' query in the support forum
on the TomTom web site.
I have found them very helpful in there.
