I bought a tom tom gps and then when I went to use it I found that it
didn't have a major freeway change (and quite a few other street
changes/ upgrades) that had been completed about 2 years ago. I later
found (in the the disclaimers at the bottom of the site page) that they
contracted google maps for their maps and had to laugh because whenever
I have used google maps I have to use the aerial view to find out where
a lot of roads really go rather than where google says they do! If only
they would put some of their money into keeping their base services up
to date rahter than going for the big flashy projects that are really
all show and not much else! My next gps is going to be magellian or
garmin (both have up to date maps.

Please give the URL of that site where TomTom says they contracted with
Google for maps so we can all share your laugh.

You buy a Magellan and a Garmin, do some research to learn something,
then come back here and post and informed opinion.

Google and TomTom do seem to use the same source of maps, or did do
until fairly recently. My workplace is several square kilometres with
its own sizeable internal road network, and these roads are represented
only partially on both Google Maps and TT. The same sections of road are
missing on each map.

They are quite different around here, particularly with new residential subdivision roads.

Just had one example today, a private subdivision road that is fine on google and not on the tomtom at all.

I am not going to knock TT
I do have a TTOne and for 3 years it has helped me but
I have the latest USA_Canada 840.2568 and to my amazement yesterday when I
wanted to go to a street in my town I could not find it then I looked for
another well known street and again it did not have it
What can I say?

You should use a Garmin or other with the openstreetmap.org map that is from
the Army & Ca state?

TeleAtlas is the source. Tomtom acquired TeleAtlas, and in their own
country maps are free (donated by and.com to openstreetmap.org).

They want to sell the maps to the whole of Europe and have their own maps
for free. The Dutch.
