I bought a Tom Tom GO 910 in September, 2006, and it has worked reliably
since then. It has maps for the UK, Western Europe, the USA and Canada, and
I have used it in all of these areas. Obviously during that period roads
have changed and new roads have been introduced but so far I have not sought
to update the maps. I have thought of buying a new device but cannot see
anything on offer from Tom Tom which has the map coverage I have already,
other than one which seemed to be exclusive to the German market and without
any English language option.

I travel in the US reasonably often so coverage of the US and Canada is a
must. Can therefore, anyone give me a heads up on what best the market has
to offer these days?

After my 910 I bought an XXL 540 World Traveler which has similar maps and
also includes lifetime updates of the North American maps. It only has 4GB of
storage instead of the 20GB with the 910 so it can not hold all of Europe and
the North American map at the same time. You can either roll the different
maps off the TomTom and onto a PC and back or else hold the North American
maps along with just one region of Europe at any one time.

I highly recommend this model but it may need to be ordered for delivery to a
USA address. Perhaps you have a friend or relative who could order or receive
this device for you and either hold it or forward it to you.

The high end TomToms, which is what that 910 was when you bought
it, can do, even if they arent necessarily like that out of the box.

Another high end TomTom if you like the user interface of the 910.
Just add the missing maps when you take it out of the box.

Thank you to Anthony, Keith and Rod for your responses. They give me
pointers in the right direction. It is interesting to note that in the US
market Tom Tom offers map updates on a regular basis well into the future.
Presumably the company has taken a commercial view that it can gouge payment
for updates from owners in the European market without losing market share.
They may well come to regret this strategy

Alaric.

I think its more that they are responding to market
pressure and there is more of that on map updates
in the US market than in europe.

It may even be that they get the updates themselves
significantly cheaper in the american market too.

They can always change that strategy if that happens.

They have in other markets like America and Australia.

I personally prefer the TomTom user interface over the
Navman and Navig8er but havent used the others much
at all except Google maps. I actually use both Google
and TomTom weekly, for the yard sales, do the yard
sale run online on the PC where I can see the overall
map and get the sequence right and then move that
to the TomTom for use in the car.

The main problem with the TomTom UI for yard sales
is that you cant just zoom around all the itinerary without
fiddling with the TomTom, you have to fiddle with it at
every stop for the next place. Bit of a nuisance by you
have to fiddle a bit anyway because you cant predict
which ones will start before the advertised time so you
cant just zoom around in the scheduled order anyway.
