Trying to update nuvi from 2012.10 to 2012.20 on my Windows computer.
Have downloaded the map but when I hit "Install" I get error message
    Problem Communicating with Server.

Just me-- or is there some problem?

FWIW, I just tried updating it using a Mac. Same result-- though with
more attractive font and graphics ;-)

    Could be a corrupted download

After 25 minutes on hold waiting to talk to Garmin tech support, the guy
said the problem was that I was not connected directly into my cable
modem-- but through a router or on wireless which created download
errors. We hung up and I hard-wired directly into the modem-- no joy.

I called back later in the day-- 15 minute wait. This guy said there was
a known issue for some users trying to update maps using the Lifetime
Map Update software which was currently "having some issues". He said
to update using the single-update software instead-- and that worked
fine. He said the problem would be fixed "soon."

I suggested adding that simple fix to the troubleshoot knowledge base on
the website which would have saved me-- and them-- a whole lot of time.
I got the telephonic equivalent of a shoulder shrug/it's not my job.

    INCIDENT EVALUATION
The good: US based, toll-free, understandable tech support guys; problem
    was in fact resolved.

The bad: too long wait times; first guy just making it up as he went
along; Garmin not having a simple fix posted on website support
troubleshoot database (maybe Mr Garmin didn't want to admit he has a
    bug/issue)

Software companies rarely like admitting to a bug. It's always dressed
    up as an "issue".

Don't forget the ancient cartoon that shows two insect-like critters
side by side. One is naked, the other is in a tuxedo. The first is
    labeled "Bug", the second "Feature".

    Lifetime update not possible

Same trouble as Gene had in November, 2011. Spent 3 hours on two different computers that both got locked up running their s/w (Win XP and Win Vista) and never got close to an update. Garmin said they were going to fix the Lifetime Update software 2 months ago. Should that take 2 months?

I like the GPS but I'm returning my top of the line 3580LMT. Maybe TomTom software will work.
