Apparently the GPS operations center set PRN01 usable but forgot to
announce it to the world.

Receivers don't care about announcements.

Just downloaded http://www.movingsatellites.com/e_gps1.html

A bit "old style" but cool to look at orbits. Uses TLE's.

For PC's, alas, but then I have WinXP running under Fusion on the Mac.

I was working on a hobby project software program when I noticed PRN01
is working. So you are correct, receivers don't wait for the
announcement.

For some reason, NANU 2011085 wasn't broadcast through the automatic
notification process. I checked the GPS Operations website and it was
there.

I have been using the Moving Satellites software for many years. It
works OK. I made my own background world map because I don't like the
textures included with the program.

The tracking algorithms were developed back in the 80's and they are
very sophisticated. They account for lunar and solar effects which
are applied selectively according to the orbital characteristics.
Evidently, Dr Kelso developed the algorithms for NORAD.

I don't care too much for the accuracy as the illustrative effect in
determining coverage issues. IOW, I'll DL fresh TLE's every few weeks
or whenever I use the program after a good interval.

Also just cool to watch in accelerated time simulation.

There is such a plugin for Google Earth, but I can't seem to get them to
pull in the TLE's from any source in a reliable manner.

The TLE's obtained from 'Open from the web' menu are usually current
to within a few days. If you need the latest data, I suppose you will
need tracking software the uses the actual GPS almanac that is updated
daily.

I've noticed the NORAD TLE's tend to lag many days for a satellite
repositioned after a Delta V.

Well - like I said, for my purposes, to the minute or day accuracy is
not important.

And with SVN63/PRN01 coming back online we're back to the best ever
PDOP with 99% at 2 or better and 99.9% at 2.7 or better.
If SVN27/PRN27 isn't too bad, bringing it back online would be useful,
as soon as SVN24/PRN24 is retired. I'm assuming they will keep SVN24
unhealthy but active until they're 100% confident that SVN63/PRN01
running on Rb1 is performing on par with SVN62/PRN25.

Another point, is there any non military advantage to using Cs clocks
for GNSS ? My educated guess is Cs clocks are only valuable for
extreme military scenarios where the ground network is out of
commission, otherwise Rb are better at stable time keeping between
updates. The IIR/IIR-M series is performing great without any Cs
clocks.

And in the future, with autonav/crosslink and Rb clocks, the
constellation could run better without Cs clocks for positioning as
long as the whole constellation have crosslinks.
