"Like many who had the pleasure of interacting with the genius that was
Steven Paul “Steve” Jobs, I have been reflecting recently concerning his
incredible impact on our lives. Indeed his impact on every aspect of our
lives including GPS is almost beyond description.

"For example, our warfighters are increasingly using iPads and iPhones
in theater for multiple functions, including some dedicated and
warfighter-developed GPS applications that far outshine any GPS
application provided by the government. When will we learn that we must
provide our warfighters what they need or they will go elsewhere to find
it because lives are at stake? Today many of our warriors are developing
their own applications on their individual iPads and iPhones, exactly as
Steve Jobs intended".

This is just so over the top. Seriously, I hate to see anyone die, but
Steve Jobs wasn't particularly important in the scheme of things.
Certainly not for anything related to a GPS. When you twist the arms of
any brass at Apple, they admit they invented nothing, but rather brought
technology to market. But certainly the GPS was very mature by the time
it made it to phones. In fact, phones had GPSs way before the iphone
existed.

What's next? Do we thank Steve Jobs for the invention of socks? Toilet
paper? Enough already with the eulogies.

I understood that Apple devices were fairly closed to amateur developers
(for understandable support reasons). Have I got that very wrong?

Not really. You pay the fees and do as you will whether amateur or
commercial developer. To distribute your app you have to go via the App
store - and their "screening" process before the app can be distributed.

You must use the Apple API's.

The Apple API's provide very limited GPS information (if that's the tack
you're on) such as position, velocity, some degree of "signal level"
(global), course, maybe time (I'm not sure).
