Get a Bluetooth GPS antenna and stick it on the roof.

Get a decent Nokia phone with navigation (download all the maps for Europe
free).

and off you go.

optional - add Bluetooth headset to listen to the instructions while
driving.

Think about this a bit! I've got a Nokia and while the sat-nav is cool I
wouldn't like to rely on it. It can take a very long time or even never
to pick up a lock, especially if you are a long way from a cell tower or
in an area with RF interference. It's great as a pocket atlas that also
works as a camera and phone, bit I reckon just a bit light as a full
feature sat nav. For driving I use a basic TomTom, which has the
additional benefits of a larger screen (easier to enter data with
touch), and user POIs with a lot more data about fuel ststions,
restaurants, hotels &c. You could even subscribe to a large vehicle
(truckers) POI set and save yourself the hassle of getting stuck up a
narrow lane or in a tight arched bridge. Any sat-nav set up to shortest
route will take you down anywhere a cat could get through if it saves a
few yards

10-20s for mine - warm start (i.e. knows roughly what time it is and is near
where last used)

Er so does the Nokia - online too if required.

Depending on how you set the driving preferences.

OTOH it does not do multiple way points etc.
