Alternatively, check what files are in the Garmin (using windows explorer)
and remove un-necessary ones, such as language and help files for other
countries. You "might" just gain enough space.

I've heard more than once that map updates have not been successful because
the unit didn't have enough space. Shame on Garmin for providing an update
(new units included) that will not fit because there is not enough memory.
Two approaches: one is to see if you can make some room by getting rid of
unncessary clutter, All those Voices, pictures that you don't need etc.
The other is to install the map update on a SD card and then select it via
Settings. Be sure to backup all the Garmin files somewhere so that you can
always go back to square one.

If you've ever hooked it up to a Mac, it put a a lot of hidden folders
on there. On a Windows machine, you'll see them as named starting with a
dot. Except for the file called DOT System, they're just taking up space
and delete them. But DO NOT delete .System (DOT System) which is the
Garmin operating system files.

And you can prevent at least the .Trashed directory from being created
(and filed you delete from mac while connected to go there and not
really free up space) by deleting the .Trashed directory and putting in
an empty .Trashes file. That will prevent MacOsx from re-adding the
..Trashes directory on next connect, and thus when you delete a file it
is really wiped off the nuvi.

Are you sure that will work? I saw a created folder on mine called
.._.Trashes (dot underscore dot Trashes)in addition to .Trashes

Problem that I encountered when the insufficient memory message was
displayed was that for some reason, the updater software never deleted
the previous map(s). IIRC, I had two other maps installed (same mapset,
just earlier edition) that for whatever reason, Garmin chose to leave on
my GPS last time.

Is it just my failing memory or does Garmin change the update procedure
nearly every time they update the maps? It just seems like I've never
updated my Nuvi 7xx's (I have two)the same way twice. Every time is a
learning experience.
