What is the point in updating maps when the maps cost more than
the TomTom?

Thats why most of us use pirated maps for the tomtom.

I bought my XL340S TomTom November 2009 and downloaded the original free map
update shortly thereafter. Took me six hours using Verizon's 768kbps DSL
service but it went without a hitch! Now I think I'd like to update the
unit, which I really like, but I just went to TomTom's site and they want
$59 for a Canada/US/Mexico map. This is highway robbery. I've felt I would
be willing to pay $25-$30 for a new map and I would probably do this once a
year. Why are they so greedy? I only paid $97 for my XL340S in the first
place.

BTW, where do you get pirated maps? A few weeks ago I upgraded to Verizon's
FIOS service and could probably download the 1.6GB map in less than an hour.

They wanted a lot more than that for an updated map for my 710.

I also like it much better than the other GPSs around,
and so does my consumer reports equivalent too.

Thats why I made an obscene gesture in their general direction
and used a pirate copy instead of being stupid enough to pay
what they wanted for an updated map. The update was well
worth having, because it added street numbers to the town
that I mostly use the GPS in, and since I mostly use if for yard
sales, that made a big difference to how useful it is for that.

Presumably they are that stupid.

Yeah, mine was also more than half what I paid for the tomtom in the first place.

I'm not in the same country you are, so that wouldnt help you.

I dont recall it took anything like that in my case, but I cant remember.

Torrents can be rather slower but I didnt need to go that route myself.

OK - let's just assume I've downloaded maps for USA, Canada, and UK.

I have a Tom Tom 930, which comes with built-in maps of all those. It's
the Australian model, so naturally it has Aussie maps too. However, I
did spring for the upgraded version of Australia maps - but I'm not
really sure what is different. So let's just assume that I have in my
possession those maps for UK, USA, and Canada.

If I un-rar them, they form a folder each, and the folder contains all
sorts of files, including the voice files.

Now how and where do I install these on my 930? Oh - I should mention
that I'm using a Mac.

What exactly do I copy, and to where on the Mac, so that it gets
recognised as needing to be transferred over to my 930 next time I hook
it up and sync?

I had a suspicion that might be the case.

Upgraded? Strewth! I thought the UK broadband was bad! An hour to download
1.6GB?

Well, he *did* say "*less* than an hour".

Actually, I also reacted as you did. Yesterday I did a quick calculation
(using 3/4 of my normal download speed of maybe 20 mbps) and came up
with something like 3 minutes...I forgot the exact result, but I'm too
lazy to redo it.

But whatever, it is less than an hour :-)
