Is the Power AC or car adapter for the Motorola Raiser Cell okay for
the Garmin Vista GPS unit. I use the USB cable for the cell, garmin,
and Canon camera.soooooooooo
shouldn't the adapters work also?

Thanks!

In my experience, some (many?) devices that use a mini-USB connector
for charging require some unusual signal to work. I suspect this is
an attempt to sell proprietary charges.

The RAZR won't charge from a vanilla USB cable unless the software
does the right thing. My Zen Vision won't charge from a Moto charger,
and my RAZR won't charge from the Zen charger. So the Garmin may or
may not work.

The mini-USB connectors have five conductors instead of four like USB.
I'm told that the chargers that have a "personality" so that the device
can identify and/or reject them get the identification info from a small
resistor that is molded into the connector or cable. That allows the
software to check for a specific value. So if you add a resistor of the
right value, you can make an otherwise ineligible device work.

None of the Garmin receivers with mini-USB connectors that I have used
will reject power from any mini-USB cable that I have tried.

It would be a gross violation of the USB specifications to make a USB or
mini-USB power adapter that had anything but 5VDC on it. That would be
a stupid thing for any manufacturer to do, it would create too many
problems for consumers and the makers too.

That would mean that if the Motorola Rzr needs 5.2-5.5VDC/800MA and it
gets its needs met with a USB cable then.....
the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx could use that same because it gets its
needs met with the same USB cable...

Faulty logic in that the Moto cell may not charge with the USB...

Just thinking aloud.

Thanks,
Ed

I recently tried a car and home charger for a motorola e815 that I
found laying around in an Etrex HcX and a nuvi 370. It worked find in
both. When working with a mini usb like the garmins/motorola use I
figured that the pinout HAS to be the same. If not, people would be
blowing up their cameras/phones/pdas and gps when they accidentaly use
the wrong cable ;o)

I just bought a brand new Krzr the other day and noticed that the
cable looked the same as the one for my 60CSx - so I tried it. It
seemed to charge no problemo. I haven't tried a data exchange yet but
since the Krzr has a built in MP3 player that is next on my list of
things to do.
