I have had a 2360 and am still discovering the shortcomings of it.

In Trip Planner, create a trip that has 3 via points.
Then add a via point somewhere between the first 3.
Click Optimize Order.
On mine, no change occurs.

Is this the same for all 23xx models?

This likely doesn't address your issue, but there's been a new
firmware release:

A friend recently bought a 2360LT, and I've asked him to test
it. So far, his comments on whether the optimization works is
"sometimes it seemed to work and sometimes it didn't".

Thanks for the information. According to Garmin:
Changes made from version 3.20 to 3.30:

Fixed an error that caused map updates to fail on some models

So I agree with you - it's probably doesn't fix this issue.
But I will download and report.

Pity he wasn't able to distinguish the conditions under which it works
from those in which it doesn't.

Seems it will take more fiddling.

Contrary to all my expectations, the firmware update to version 3.30
*has fixed* the Optimize Order function.

I had previously saved a trip in Trip Planner to use as an example of
malfunction. At that time, when I clicked on Optimize Order, absolutely
nothing happened.

This time I got a screen saying something like "recalculating", and the
percentage complete, then it showed me the trip with via points in
logical order.

Good for Garmin!

+1 to Garmin for fixing the issue, but -0.5 for failing to mention it
in their release notes.

Not really, they didn't want to admit it was broken and gave the
project to
some newbie to fix. You cannot do circular trips, on the Nuvi 855 you
could
eliminate the end point from the optimization so you could go from
Home to Home via many stops with the route optimized, but not with
this optimization.
It puts both Home's together and leaves the route hanging out in the
middle
of nowhere.

That sounds fully optimised to me! How else could it be done? What else
would "optimised" mean?

I just tried it, and it worked perfectly on mine. It did not "put both
Home's together".
