Some Garmins do use a special cable where a resistor is connected
between two leads of the connector so the device can tell whether it's
charging or on a computer, but I am not sure if that's still true, or
if it is, whether there are work-arounds to use a standard cable.
This has been discussed in this NG, but not very recently, and I don't
remember any useful details, sorry.
I seem to do OK with whatever cable I happen to grab (Nuvi 1490).
