So every week or two when I turn on my nuvi 255W, I get this bug-me
screen saying my map is over a year old and I need to buy a new one--
which I'm not about to do given the cost of the map vs. the cost of a
new GPS with lifetime maps.

Is there a way to disable the bug-me message?

Well, besides the option buying newer map, the only other option is not
ruining your lovely day. There is no option but ignoring it.

I also got tired of the bug-me message so I downloaded an unlocked map
and installed it. The result was an updated map and no more bug-me
messages. Some people will find this solution unacceptable.

since you appear to be easily bugged by life's little gems
such as KEEP LEFT or KEEP RIGHT ,
just add this to your growing list until it's just too much
and you can then toss the GPS or just not turn it on...
which pretty much solves your problem(s)

To me it's a fine option. IOW, if Garmin uses annoying ads to sell their
products then owner has the right to stop the annoying ads.

Torrent sites. Current map out there for North America is version
2011.31.

Try btjunkie.org and search for "GARMIN"

The other solution is not to turn it off. I did that and all is well with
the world.
