I have a 1 yr old GO 720. It worked perfect up until a week ago
Thursday. I used it for the first time since then and have a problem.

I hold the start button down as usual and hear the drums but, see
nothing. A few moments later a voice tells me that my phone is synced,
as is normal, still nothing on the screen. It is blank, just the
slightest bit above black. If I depress the power button the screen goes
fully black. I have charged the unit while driving for at least 6 hrs. I
tried reset. Same result.

I am not at home so do not have access to my PC or cables.
Any one have a clue?
Thanks.
Bill

Hi Bill,

Not sure if it is the same as my TT One XL, but on mine, if I hold the start
button in for about 15 seconds, it will reset the software and get you going
again.

On mine, it wouldn't get by the second screen and show the map, and a reset
fixed it up without any loss of POIs or other info.

Thanks Larry.

I have a dedicated reset button which doesn't help. I tried holding the
power button in for an extended period and get the same result.

Have you tried holding the re-set and the power buttons in together for
up to 15 sec?

Peter, thanks for the reply.
I just tried what you suggested, held power & reset for 15+ seconds.
When I turned the unit on I heard the drum but no phone sync. the screen
lightened slightly, I had to look closely, and the went back to black. I
touched the power button again the screen lightened and went black
almost instantly.

I'm starting to think that the screen went bad.
Thanks again.

Hi Bill.
I guess your screen is out of order.
Anyway, if by chance this is a weird software issue, it worth a try to run a
"chkdsk" DOS command onto your device in the event it might found a
corrupted system file (both on internal memory and the SD card if you have
one).
Rgds.

For anyone following this thread...

I finally got home.

Connecting to Home does not allow me to see the screen but other
features work, including operating the unit from the PC.

I called TomTom, had about a 2 minute wait. Tech listened carefully
and then sent me the answer to a different problem.

I called them back, someone answered. They listened and sent me an
update link and instructions. The link was correct but the
instructions were wrong.

I called them back. Someone answered. They stayed on the line while I
did everything they asked. I couldn't format the unit.

She said it was broken and they wouldn't fix it but would give me a
discount on a new one if I bought it from them, for customer loyalty.
Right.
Is Garman any better?
Thanks to all that tried to help.

Can't say I'm not suprised, but if you do get one of their helpdesk
staff who actually wants to help it's like finding a pot of gold.

Yes I actually did at one stage, mind you I've just about given up on
their support as the light in the distance is only there when they
open their mouths as they are so far up themselves.

Wonder when they discover that their jobs depend on the customer. Not
a lot of spare money around now so their jobs will be at a premium,
not that I would wish redundancy upon anybody (other than the TT
'helpdesk' staff) of course.

Plenty of operations never do.

The fundamental problem with any helpdesk operation is that
anyone who is any good wont be doing that sort of work for long.
