My Navman iCN330 is struggling to locate satellites, and when it has located
them it sometimes loses the signals and has to start searching again. Is
there a fix for this or should I bin it?

Try a reset?

I have reset it to factory default, but that hasn't made any difference. But
thanks for the suggestion.

Navman Customer support advised me to try a reset and to try turning it off
and on using the toggle switch to refresh its settings, which has fixed the
problem.

Does it only struggle when in the car, does it work ok outside?
Some cars have special windscreens which block the satellite signal.

Doesn't work outside of car which has an ordinary windscreen. The reset and
power off/on fix only worked temporarily, so Navman customer support have
asked me to return the unit for repair under the guarantee.

A friend's Peugeot creates problems for my Garmin Geko whereas positioning
on the side windows gives better reception. My first thought was that it was
something below the unit causing it problems rather than the glass.

Whether tinting or even screen heating wires upsets reception, I don't know.

Anyway, having dropped in from SD 17221 80371, I wonder if there are any GPS
users around here or are you all satnavites?

Mike.

Screen heating wires will definitely cause problems, as does the
transparently thin metal film used in heat reflecting screens.

I've had experience of both, which is why I mentioned it. Only with a
Medion PPC150 running the Navigon software, though, (SIRFStar II chipset
with a pancake antenna, I believe) as I can't afford multiple GPS units
to test.

The new-to-me iPaq messenger 6515 has only been out to play in a coach
so far, so I couldn't say whether that would be affected, although from
the way it locks on to satellites indoors within a couple of seconds
once it's got the full almanac data from the web, it probably won't be.
It's a marginal thing, with the sensitivity of the receiver combining
with the combined reduction in signal from all sources, including trees,
rain and the like, as well as the receiver being able to know where it
was from the last good fix, combined with a knowledge of where it
expects to be now from the satellites it can see judging from the
almanac data it stores.
