So Navigon releases a cool new GPS app for the Iphone for about $79.
I'm looking all over their website for an instruction manual... can't find
one. Further searching message boards reveals that others have asked, and
are told "sorry but there's no instruction manual at this time". Can you
imagine what nerve they have to sell a product for that much money and no
instructions? You can't make it up.

If the user interface is any good, you dont need a manual.

I take your point, it is good to site down with a manual and read
through, but help might be included within the application itself.
That's something worth checking. It does seem odd to offer what
appears an unfinished product.

You're making excuses for a big company selling an expensive product?
Even a toaster and a TV comes with an instruction booklet. Wouldn't you
think that something as intricate as a GPS program would have some nice
features and maybe even shortcuts that they should tell buyers about? No
this is purely a lack of concern about the customer. The level of greed has
them rush the product to the marketplace before the programmers can take an
hour to write up instructions.

For people who don't know how to make toast.

Oh--and "anyone can make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but can you
make a GOOD one?":

You don't want to screw this recipe up. Follow these instructions
CAREFULLY.

Yeah I get it. The people SHOULD know how to figure out how a program
works, but the company pocketing the money, SHOULDN'T have to provide an
instruction book. Using a GPS program is certainly as simple as making a
p&j sandwich. The sucker spending the $79 should take a few hours, and trial
and error and figure it out, right Elmo?

I'm sorry, but there are procedural errors in the instructions.

1. I *always* use a spoon for the jelly.
2. The instructions fail to account for the occasional open-face sandwich.
3. The instructor should have used a clean knife to cut the sandwich.
4. It is possible to clean the knife without using a paper towel or similar
implement. Simply scrape it on a portion of the bread where there is no
peanut butter.

:-)

I hope this does a half-decent job of looking like a typical Usenet post -
or even a troll.

OK, disclosure time. (a) I really thought the clip was well done (excellent
poker face delivery, and actually a good procedure to boot), and (b) I'm
only half kidding above...

Nope, rubbing your nose in the basics.

> Even a toaster and a TV comes with an instruction booklet.

If you actually need the manual for the toaster, you really do have a problem.

And its a lot easier to do a decent intuitive user interface with a GPS than a toaster anyway.

I've never bothered with the manual for IE, the GPS, even Excel and Access either. Its a
lot more productive to use the net to resolve any question you have instead of the manual.

Dont need to tell the buyer about them if the user interface is designed properly.

Wrong, as always.

No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy something that doesnt have a manual.

If someone is doing that, call the cops.

Thats a much harder situation to have a good user interface with.

Nope, you never do.

And with a good user interface, even a fool can do that.

Its even feasible to cover the most basic stuff like what a GPS is for in the help too.

> but the company pocketing the money, SHOULDN'T have to provide an instruction book.

I'd rather they spend the money on the user interface instead of a manual.

Its MUCH easier to do a decent user interface with a GPS.

> The sucker spending the $79 should take a few hours, and trial and error and figure it out, right Elmo?

If it takes you a few hours to work out how to use a GPS its got a completely ****ed user interface.
