What is the "Maximize Magellan MapSend GPS software file size limit" issue/solution found on eBay?

I have a new eXplorist 500LE I have not yet installed to my PC. I use
Vista and read of a compatibility issue, so will install on my XP
laptop. Looking for batteries on eBay, found offer for what seller
said was a "solution to the 16mb map size limitation" for map
transfers to the SD card on the handheld. He was selling
"instructions" to a procedural solution to make a map as large as
desired to fit onto the SD. First, I do not yet know of the validity
of such reported problem but thought of this site, believing
knowledgeable veterans here would already have discussed the problem
and solution if such was common. The eBay dude may have discovered
a solution to a common problem, and is justifiably capitalizing on it.
Or he may have "discovered" the solution on a group like this, and
"developed" a marketing bonanza, having discovered most owners do not
frequent binary groups and are willing to pay $6 for an otherwise free
solution.

Below is a quoted summary from one eBay auction:

"I own a Magellan GPS Meridian and got tired of making a bunch of
little 16 Mb maps to get me from a to b. So I did some research and
found a way using Magellan/Thalles MapSend software to make ANY map I
need. No more need for bunches of little maps to map your route. I am
selling you the method to make maps to fit your Secure Digital card. I
have a 1 gig card and can hold the entire US Direct Route map and most
of the US Topo map on one card!!! Want to learn the method that is not
out there for the general public? Invest $6 and you will find your GPS
more useful than ever before. No shipping because I email you the
instructions. Works for any MapSend software except BlueNav. This is a
must have for any Magellan GPS owner. I understand that Magellan lists
the Meridian for instance of having a 128 MB limit, wrong, it takes
any size SD card. So get my info and a 1 gig or 512 MB card and see
the true potential of your expensive GPS device.

MapSend Streets & Destinations USA limits maps to 16Mb each, while the
whole US is 900Mb.

MapSend Topo limits maps to 16 Mb each, while the whole US is 640Mb.

MapSend DirectRoute limits maps to 64Mb each, while the whole US is
940Mb.

Remember that you have to manually switch maps, the GPS does not do it
for you. So making 50 little maps is not the same as 1 big map. Go
limitless with my system. My system removes their limit and enables
you to make any size YOU want.

Works with ANY SIZE card.
Works with Explorist as well but NOT roadmate.

DIRECTIONS INCLUDE POWERPOINT WITH SCREENSHOTS STEP BY STEP."

Does this problem and/or a solution look familiar?

The seller's feedback supports the seller's claim of a valid solution,
but "Got what I paid for" was common, suggesting the solution was so
obvious as to be worth the $6 to save the personal research, but only
that.

Other than, "Give the guy 6 bucks and get it yourself", can anyone
share what this is here, please? Is it something Magellan would have
shared in the manual, but couldn't because it involved another
copyrighted software in the solution?

Thanks for whatever can be shared.

Take a look at your MAPSEND.INI in the main MapSend folder. Under the
[DEVICE_DEFAULTS] section play with the Conv_Memory_Size setting. This
value is in kilobytes. The default value varies depending on which
MapSend you have. I think the highest value that I've tried is 256 mb
(262144), but it has been a while.
