Free in the sense that it was included at no charge when I bought my maps
from Garmin.

Not natively.

Here's a list of the Mac software Garmin provides

OK, thanks. I haven't bought any new maps so I guess I'll do without it.

Looks like Garmin's business model is more selling software than little
GPS boxes. Reminds me of the old Gillette strategy: damn near give away
the razor, then hit 'em hard on the blades!

Well, it's neither free nor pay. Cuz

1. Many years ago it's PAID and came with every unit we bought. IOW, thing
comes with hardware is PAID not free

2. Some years ago, Garmin decided to STEAL from consumers by not including
neither MapSource nor Data Map with any newer unit.

Now, if you want to have the MapSource then you may have to BUY the newer
map (on DVD or they may allow to download online).

3. And while Garmin is still putting out newer MapSource *UPDATE* which
requires to have full MapSource already installed which most newer Garmin
owners do not have.

And many people get free Garmin Customers Service from pirate instead of
Garmin, and Garmin has been paying dearly for the customers service run by
the thid party.

Also, there are some links to some older, cracked, modified, get around
etc. MapSource. And I still don't understand why Garmin won't allow
customers to download the full version of MapSource which is pretty much
useless without Map Data (City Navigator).

Yes, would be useless.

You get MapSource with update to City Navigator maps, free for any
user registering new nuvi.

You can download many maps with Mapsource, for example Topo Slovakia
http://forum.garmin.sk/filebase.php?c=79&f=263&page=1

BaseCamp is a free mapping program from Garmin, you get full version
with base map. If you have BaseCamp installed, than you can install
update for Mapsource.

The "updates" on Garmin's Web site are actually complete; they just
check to see that another version of MapSource has already been
installed, presumably on the assumption that you got that copy with a
Garmin map purchase.

There have been several postings describing the registry hack that
convinces the MapSource "updates" that you already have an older version
installed.

It's also been reported that installing a free Garmin program "Training
Center" will allow the MapSource updates to be installed.

'Hacking' and prior version is unnecessary with the latest MS version,
just download MS from Garmin at:

http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_6163.exe

Simply un-archive this downloaded EXE file, and run the 'MSmain.msi'
file--NOT 'Setup.exe'.

This will install just MS to your PC, but no maps though. Maps can be
easily downloaded, installed and used in MS--just Google.

Thanks for the info. For many years, I haven't registered any of my newer
GPS (yet)

Hmmm I did register my first GPS over a decade ago I may try to see if
they allow me to download the full Mapsource (I still have few DVDs with
MapSource but just wondering).
