I just purchased the Garmin c340. I thought you could plan trips and
such on this. Is this not true? I thought that MapSource was the key
as well as the POI Loader, however, whenever I try to open up
MapSource I get the following error: "mapsource could not find any
installed mapsource map products....Please install one or more
MapSource map products and start MapSource again." When I try again
and re-connect it to the computer via its included USB cord, gStart
pops up asking me if I would like to Plan a trip or Load Points of
Interest. When I select Plan a trip then click start, I get the above
mentioned error message. Does anybody know what I have done wrong?
Does this device not work with those softwares? It shows up in the
devices and even

yeah, that was all I wanted to say. Sorry about the half sentence.
Meant to delete it before posting. I appreciate your time and thank
you for any help in advance.

The C340 comes pre-loaded with some version of Garmin maps? You received no
DVD to install maps on your PC. Therefore, there ARE no maps on your PC to
use to plan a trip, in which case MapSource is pretty useless.

It is not true. You can only upload Favorites to the C340. Once there,
those can be chosen as destinations. And in some cases you can add one
via point to a route after it is activated so if you uploaded a
destination and a via point you could, at least in theory, choose a
destination and then a via point from your Favorites. See my comments
below about multiple destination routing.

The older Garmin products came with mapping on a CD or DVD and that was
the mapping that was used to upload maps to the GPS receiver. So you
had the mapping both on the PC and the GPS. When they started selling
GPS receivers with the mapping pre-loaded, they also included the DVD
with the same mapping so that you could still do the planning on the PC
and upload the routes.

Then they started selling the dumbed down models that had fewer
navigation options and they quit including the DVD with the mapping in
the sale.

But, last I knew, if you call Garmin support at 1 800 800 1020 and ask
for it they will send you the DVD with the mapping you have for free.
When you install that it will also install the MapSource application,
MapSource will host the mapping data, and you'll be off and running.

That download is an update, it needs to find a MapSource install and
then it will all work. And you have to get the MapSource install from
the City Navigator NT DVD Garmin is going to send you for free (please
tell us if they won't send you a free DVD).

If you want a GPS receiver that will let you do trip planning on a PC
and have full control of the routing you need a Garmin model that will
do multiple destination routing and route optimization. Current models
that will do those things are:

StreetPilot 2720,
StreetPilot 2820,
Quest,
Quest 2,
StreetPilot 7200,
StreetPilot 7500,
zumo 450,
zumo 550

That list is not all inclusive or guaranteed to be right, you can use
the Product Comparison feature from the various product pages to look at
the capabilities and compare features. The multiple destination routing
feature can be spotted by looking at the "# of Routes/# of waypoints per
route" row (look for more than "1"). Here is the page for automotive
products:

http://www.garmin.com/automotive/products.html

The best deal for someone that does not need the "brain candy" features
that replaced the navigation features is to look for something like a
refurbished StreetPilot 2610 for about $300-$325 or so.

Garmin seems to think that they are meeting the needs of consumers with
their current models, many of us that are using the older models do not
agree with them on that. If you think Garmin missed the market's needs
and expectations, tell them about it here:

I called Garmin the last time this thread ran, what 5-6 weeks ago? It
took that long for the DVD to arrive. By UPS, no less. Cost them $5 to
ship it, when less than a $1 in postage would have done just as well.

Well at least they were still giving the free DVDs. As for the UPS
thing, no one ever accused Garmin of being smart...

I've heard about obtaining the program media by just calling garmin
and asking for it in the past. The yellow registration paper included
with the unit even specifies "This unlock code is used to enable
Garmin software products to work on your PC." My first 2 times calling
to obtain this "free disc" were unsuccessful. Sorry but I don't
remember the content of their answers to me but I remember that I was
frustrated.
After reading this, I thought I'd try once again to see what would
happen since one person indicated success. The lady who answered the
phone (Julie) basically just grilled me with questions like "why do
you want it if it's pre-installed on your unit?". Then she transferred
me to the software support group with the intent of determining if
there was a way to transfer the software from the unit to the PC and I
was on hold A LONG TIME. I didn't time it but now I wish that I had.
Zack from software support came on the line so I just repeated my
question to him. He said I can have the media simply by asking and
will ship the DVD out tomorrow via UPS ground. I have to admit that I
was a little surprised since I tried this already twice
unsuccessfully.

On a side note, for those interested, City Navigator NT v9 is expected
to be released by the middle of the year.

I got my City Navigator NA NT v8 DVD but it does not contain
mapsource. Just the maps update. Maybe I just don't have good luck
with that company?
