When buying such maps via TomTom Home, do they download straight
into the device, or first onto a PC drive?

(I would copy the satnav system (via Bakcup) onto a 2GB SD card, then
add the Africa maps.)

Normally, they download onto your local hard drive as a local copy, then
are transferred either to the device or the memory card according to
your preference.

Use Tomtom Home to back up the device to your hard drive, then use it to
add the maps. That's what I do, anyway....

Or just make a directory on your HD, and copy the *entire* SD card
contents into it using Explorer. You'll need to tell Explorer to show
hidden and system files to get a proper copy, though. You'll miss any
files that aren't on the card, too.

Stumbled at 1st hurdle! Following the procedure shown by TT Home:

(1) Did a backup from TomTom One XL (using TT Home)
(2) Disconnected TomTom
(3) Inserted SD card (2GB - empty, FAT32)
(4) Reconnected
(5) Selected Backup/Restore

Got message:

"You cannot use this feature because it is not supported by your
device"!

Anyone know what that's all about, please?

Would it work just to copy all the files from the TomTom's internal
storage to the SD card? (Copy by file, or image copy?)

Yes, it would - just tried that. The TomTom now works as before
with the SD card inserted.
Even TomTom Home (2.6) will regard the SD card as the satnav when
connected via a card reader.

The qustion now is: Where do I get a "South Africa" map from to add
onto the SD card?

TomTom Home shows one for £40. Would that download straight into the
satnav (SD card), or into the PC for copying over?

Is there a better source where I can buy a S.Africa map for download?
