I'm looking for a PDA primarily to use in the hills for navigation on foot
using OS and French Maps I already have. I don't need a phone or camera, but
would like a small amount of internet access and email use. I would
especially like a keyboard, otherise the Mio P550 would seemingly have been
the one. Price range under £200. Battery life important, pref more than 4
hours.

Would appreciate advice - thanks.

I've answered your question in alt.satellite.gps. Please don't multipost!

I'm using an HP iPaq Messenger 6515, bought second hand. It should run
the software you want under Windows CE 2003SE, has GPRS capability with
the right SIM, a keyboard, GPS built in and reasonable battery life,
improved with the option of an extended battery from third party
suppliers for 60 quid or so. It will also talk to an external bluetooth
GPS receiver or headset if you ask it nicely. It has known issues with
Tomtom 6 and isn't weatherproof without an extra case, though.

I suspect the replacement (6519?) would be as good.

I paid 85 quid plus 40 quid for a new battery a few weeks ago.

Crikey it's coming up as £375 on Amazon - you got a good price.

Yup. Second hand, SIM free, but the battery wouldn't take a charge and
there was no software included. The one on Amazon may well be new old
stock or something of the sort.

Now and again, I get lucky.

Have you ever heard of getting suggestions from a few people then chosing
your best option. The OP received 1 reply from the group, ie you and you
ened with "Don't know if it's still available". Hardly the best piece of
advice about is it for something that may be quite an expense?

Eurofeeds, carry on mate, get as many suggestions as you can before making
your final choice.

Hey,

I didn't mean to offend anyone. I just noticed that the same question
was posted in alt.satellite.gps. However it seems there's not so many
traffic in that group. It's just annoying that the answers given in the
one group aren't visible in the other, possibly causing multiple answers
pointing the TS into the same direction.

To get a SIM card, the easy way is to go to your local Carphone
Warehouse, Phones 4 U, Vodafone, 3 store, or other shop of your choice
and shop around. When you've got your SIM, just pop it in your phone,
then it will need activating either by making a phone call or using the
internet and Bob's your uncle. The phone number is allocated to the SIM,
so whichever phone you use it in, the bill comes to you, and the number
displayed is your number. That's the easy bit.

I spoke to Vodafone direct, but I've got a business account, so I added
a new line to the account, and the SIM arrived a day or two later by post.

The hard bit is deciding which of the many hundreds of confusingly
priced tariffs is the best for your purposes. Some of the pay as you go
tariffs let you use them for data, some don't, but the cost per megabyte
on *all* of them that I've looked at is horrendous. The cheap deals that
the operators offer of so many Gigabytes for a few quid a month can
either be used with the dongle that comes free or, if the sim can be
removed, with any unlocked phone, as long as you can work out the
incantation it needs to contact the service provider. Often, you can
save a bit on the initial costs by going for a SIM only deal. You need
to ask about this, as once you've signed up, you're stuck with that
tariff for at least a year, even on pay as you go. Most of the data
tariffs don't allow voice calls, unfortunately. Also, some of the best
tariffs are only available through the websites, and are very well hidden.

If you can find a *good* independent retailer, they are your best bet,
otherwise all the big companies offer more or less the same tariffs.
