Loading a map to my Nuvi 880- Questions

Hello everyone,
I have an 880 with the preloaded NA maps. I'm going to Barbados in
January and had the bright idea of taking my gps.
Initially I was deluded enough to presume that it would have the
Barbados in it, nope. I located what appears to be a free Bajan
map ... http://www.accu-nav.com/BajanNav/BajanNav.html ... and have
requested access to it. (no reply yet, but it has only been 24 hours).

But if it comes how do I load it without over writing my NA maps? I've
seen some stuff online saying that it is possible to lock up the gps
if I do it incorectly etc. My iclination is to copy all the files on
the GPS to my laptop so that they can simply be copied back to the gps
when I return?

I have downloaded Garmins Basecamp and a free London UK map (348-4903-
londonstreet.kmz) which does apear in the basecamp when I open it. My
idea is to experiment with that before I get the barbados map.

I'd really appreciate help or directions to a useful FAQ,
Thanks,
Tarpon

You could consider downloading the free OpenStreetMap routable
map. A routable map is simply one which contains the road
interconnect information which allows your GPS to give you
turn-by-turn directions from A to B.

The download is here: http://www.osmmaps.com/

You buy a blank micro-SD card and create a top-level
directory/folder on it called:

Garmin

You put the downloaded gmapsupp.img file into that folder.

Then it's simply a matter of switching the nuvi over to that map.
Typcally: Tools / Settings / Map / Info. And then tick only the
OSM entry.

John,
thanks for the help.
The Bajan map was sent to me and it has the gmapsupp.img file so I
will buy a card and load it as you recommend.

I actualy forgot that my nuvi 880 has a micro sd slot, I was only
thinking about the larger sd card that my camera takes. The folks that
sent the Barbados map kindly reminded me that it takes a micro card,
very nice of them!

Hope it all works well and I don't have to ask more questions...but...
can I put more then one map on a card? Or must the "map file" always
be called gmapsupp.img and be in the root directory?

All the best,
john

The unit will only recognize one gmapsupp.img file, and it has to
be in the \Garmin directory.

That said, if you install MapSource [1] you then should be able to
add the new map, and install a new gmapsupp.img file that includes
whichever maps you select. See:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_MapSource

[1] I think you said you have BaseCamp, so from there I believe
there are ways to install MapSource--check the group archives.
Here is one example:

Thank you everyone for the help. I puchased a micro SD card and loaded
the Barbados map on it and it works fine. I do have Basecamp, so with
that and th eadvice in the replies I'll see if I can get a couple of
maps loaded on the card using basecamp etc.
