I wonder if Garmin realizes that having to download your maps over the
internet is a deal-breaker for most people?

I live in an area that does not have 3G in most places, and no coverage
at all in some.

I am very willing to sacrifice a few gigs for offline maps. I've used
their Windows Mobile app, and that is how it works. It's just a Nuvi
app. I've had a Garmin hand held for years, so having maps is not a
problem for me, and also most people don't realize that you can get
Garmin-compatible auto-routing maps from Open Source Map for free anyhow.

You can buy Garmin maps on DVD or SD card all over the place.
Downloading is a convenience, not a requirement.

Then you've already found the answer: real standalone units are better
for situations of marginal coverage.

Yes, but you misunderstand. Garmin's new iPhone app ONLY downloads maps
off the internet, there is no way (that I know) to buy maps and transfer
them to an iPhone.

Where's the SD slot in iPhone? Besides, downloading on demand in many cases
is a very big inconvenience, even more so travelling abroad.

yes, it is. However it's a very interesting position of the marketologists
at Garmin entering a new market and delivering a half finished/cut down
product.

Judging by the availability of an SD card reader adapter for the iPhone,
I'd guess, as an non-iPhone user that the iPhone does not have an inbuilt
SD card reader.

Ah, this link confirms no SD card reader on the iPhone4...

Any additional device needs additional power. GPS running needs also more
power. The occupied connector means no external power with the card ->soon
flat battery->no much use as GPS even in the car.

You're starting to see some of the many limitations of the iPhone.

Software's cheap. And I'm sure that porting Nüvi code to a new platform
means that it's 80% written already.
