Can I have some help, please?
I know nothing about the capabilities of satnav/GPS units but I think
that i'm going to need one.
I've just bought a motorcycle with the intention of using it to
explore the South West of England, unmarked country lanes, etc., and I
can see that I'm regularly going to be lost.
I understand that most models can be handheld and will show me map
references but there are a few other things to consider.

- It doesn't need to be mounted on the bike, I can stop, take it out
of a pocket, and ask it how to get home.
- Good battery life, it needs to last a day, although it can be turned
off for large parts of that.
- Detailed maps, do they normally show Cornish lanes?
- It would be nice if it would also work in a car.
- Inexpensive, I've just spent several thousand on the bike and
several hundred on the clothing. I see that Amazon shows dozens of
items between £100 to £150 (like the TomTom One, etc.) which look as
if they might fit the bill but I really need someone to point out any
possible pitfalls.

Yes, but they really expect to be telling you on a turn-by-turn basis,
whereas you seem to be expecting to memorise a succession of directions. Not
sure how that would work.

Are you patient? When turned off these devices usually forget where you are
and need some time to re-gather data when switched back on. This is known as
"warm start" or "cold start" depending on how long it has been switched off.
(It takes several hours to "cool"; which really means for the satellites to
be somewhere different after the delay.)

Some devices can be put in "power save" mode that keeps them ticking over
ready for immediate action which could be useful. Or cannot your bike
provide power?

You don't know enough about motorbike GPS units to ask useful
questions.Take a look at some in a shop, or you might look at this
