FYI,, While surfing the web trying to figure out what happened to
Gringo, I came across this group and a note of about 21 Feb 2006
regarding the Gringo web site and thought I would add may experience!
I was in contact with Chris Hill just before Christmas of 2005
concerning the possibility of using Gringo with my new GPS60. I last
heared from him on Christmas eve and we did work through the problem
and were able to get the demo version to work with the Garmin GPS60
using a trick in the Gringo INI file. The software looks for known
units and if it doesn't recognize it in the ID, it defaults to the
original GPS12 which will probably fail with the newer units and did
with the GPS60. There is a way to force the software to look for the
different known flavors of Garmin. Chris had me add a line to the
end of the INI file, ForceFormat=n where n is a number from 0
to 3 or 4. Start with 0 and if that doesn't work try 1, 2, etc
through about 4. My GPS60 worked with 2. (My GPS60 needs to run at
a minimum of about 28,800 baud for a no error record). After playing
with the software for a few days (and was very pleased) I sent my
serial number in to get a registration code on Dec 31 2005 and have not
heard anything from them since??????? I've sent several emails to
the Gringo address as well as to Chris Hill with no responce so
far??????? I did not get any hint from Chris that there would be a
problem, in fact I got the impression that he would be updating the
software???????? I expected a delay through the regular holiday, but
puzzled after more than two months!!!! I don't know if they are on
extended winter holiday or what???????? I'm still hopeful that I
will be able to register the software, someday?????? After
attempting to use OMNI for post processing, Gringo will be a dream!!!!
My etrex and etrex venture worked, but had too many errors with
ASYNC (haven't tried it with my GPS60) If someone comes up with a way
to change the baud rate to about 28,800 it would probably be good
software for recording raw data with some of the newer Garmins, but it
doesn't do post processing!!!!
