GPS Emulator for PC

I am new to GPS and having looked around have found several ways to
track our company van.

The cheapest solution (as I already own a palm m505) was to use the
excellent Cetus GPS to log data from a GPS mouse connected to the palm
device.

However I could not really find any easy way to reply these logs back
when the van returned to base.

Cetus also provides excellent tools to convert the Palm database
(after it has been backed up to your PC) into GPX format but it would
seem Autoroute cannot import this data.

The idea of importing each GPS reading as Waypoints did not appeal.

Some software can import the data and map it but getting a controlled
(faster/slower/pause) replay of the log onto a detailed map seems a
little harder.

In the end I used an old NULL modem cable, connected COM ports 1 and 2
together on my PC and wrote a very basic GPS emulator which can replay
the log (after it has been converted to txt with gpsutiliy app)

It works well, Autoroute thinks it has a GPS antenna connected and
simply tracks the movements onto the map.

When I say emulating - all it does it send $GPGGA sentences decoded
from the logs as well as highlighting any breaks in GPS data greater
than 20 seconds (i.e. the driver has turned off the ignition while
making a delivery).

Rather than continue to develop this little app has anyone else
already written an application which will play back GPS logs to a
serial port emulating a GPS unit?

Mike

www.sailsoft.nl has a relative simple GPS simulator and also a full blown
NMEA sentence generator for several instruments generating NMEA data,
including GPS. For both products a free trial can be downloaded.
