I want a GPS to give me the OS Map reference. I don't need any road or
topographical mapping. Can anyone recommend any appropriate software

Most GPSs (other than a "mouse" type) can be set to show OS-GB.

If your does, make sure that you change the datum from WGS84 to OSGB also
otherwise the refeernces will be wrong

Are you sure that you mean software? If so, for what operating system etc.

Any of the 'outdoor' Garmins can give an OS grid reference. And they
will automatically set the correct datum when you choose British grid
for the position format.

Cheapest and simplest would be something like the eTrex or Geko.

No doubt that will be true for newer ones but is not for my decade-old
GPS-II+, so beware if buying 2nd hand.

If all you want is a simple hand-held GPS receiver that will show your
position as a national grid easting and northing, perhaps the eTrex H
would do. It's sensitive and it's cheap (c. £70).

Software? GPS Trackmaker is good and it's free, it will transfer data
from a GPS to a PC (and vice versa) and display it on a simple grid or
on a scanned-map.

Regards, N.
