Looking for information before I take the plunge to upgrade my old 500.
On my 500 I can get traffic updates by connecting to TomTom traffic service,
that I pay for via subscription, through my mobile phone. I understand that
the 'T' versions have a receiver that you connect an aerial to, run round
the inside edge, up the side and along the top of the windscreen to pick up
traffic information via an FM radio station, Classic FM I think. As Classic
FM reception in my daily commute can be a bit flaky, I am tempted to stay
with the subscription service and go for a non 'T' version. What I am
wondering is that if I do go for the 'T' version can I still use the mobile
phone version of the traffic service if reception of the free service is not
reliable enough?

Hi Ian.
First of all, I you leave (or travel) in USA, you'll have to pay an annual
fee anyway, even if using the TMC antenna.
That being said (written ;-)) the answer to your question is yes : if TMC
antenna is unplugged you still can use GPRS connection to get (paying)
traffic information from TT services.

I have used the traffic information system you describe.on my 930T. Yes it
is broadcast by Classic FM and yes, reception is "flaky".
I do not consider the traffic information on the 930T is good enough to
warrant you purchasing the T version.

I hope that you'll forgive me for a slight change of topic. I wonder
whether anyone has used the TomTom HD traffic information system and whether
they consider it is of any real use?

Hi Lionel
Thanks for the information. I am in sunny, well today anyway, Scotland and
do not mind paying the annual fee for the traffic service if it is better
than the 'T' version, although I can get a 'T' version of most of the units
for not much more than the standard version therefore may decide to go for
this option and then I am ready to switch if reception ever improves.

Hi Terry
I did consider the "X40 Live" versions to use the HD traffic but I cannot
justify the monthly cost of the subscription, around £8 - £9 I think, it
updates every 3 minutes and I can set my 500 to update similarly without too
much extra usage on my inclusive data connection on my phone. The 500 also
has the facility to check the weather and, if need be, I can use my mobile
for most of the other things that the Live offers.
