The Tom Tom website is silent about new maps for my GO 700.
Is the model now considered obsolete, and the manufacturer too coy to
admit it?

I see mentions of the GO 700 back to Mar. 2005.

It's a good bet that they've dropped support.

You could also log into the discussion pages at the TomTom site.

After selecting GO 700 in "Select your device - Option 2":

Example after selecting UK & Ireland in dropdown menu under "Europe,
Middle East & Africa" :

A lot of discussions here, though not sorted by date:

I have a TomTom car navigator. It's OK, serves its purpose, but I'm
not thrilled with it.

I was under the impression I could get a map update. So I went online
and registered the product and was informed no map update was
available. I checked back a few months later and was informed my
update period expired.

Maybe my misunderstanding of the terms. But, I'm never buying another
TomTom product.

I finally got an update to my TomTom after refusing their many expensive
updates (single) and services (quarterly).

Then a reasonable priced update appeared (about $40, North America) so I
went for it.

Would not install. I posted messages on their support site, they
regurgitated the instructions and insisted I or my computer was at
fault. Finally phoned them and the lady on the other end quickly zoomed
in on the problem: they had given me the wrong update files (it was
based on exact model number and configuration). She fixed the "ticket"
(whatever) and then I DL'd again and it worked. 3 days of back and
forth messages and time lost.

1) TomTom does not recognize the entered name of some major streets in
my city. But when you get there it announces and shows those streets.

2) It cannot decode a postal code properly to get destination position.

3) It will occasionally guide one down secondary roads where a better
route exists. Has not occurred with the latest s/w update, however.

Next one will likely be a Garmin. OTOH, I'll look very carefully at the
available devices before I buy.
