Garmin Nuvi 265WT: Getting Spammed

I'm starting to get popups on my Nuvi; things like

"Ramada Worldwide - Stay 3, save 20%@ramada.com
Coupon: Call 1-800-566-1704 to book!"

The culprit seems tb Tools | Offers.

Has this been there since I bought the device?

Or have they pushed something down via the Traffic feature?

Never noticed it before; OTOH, today was the first day I used it
in "walking around" mode instead of just driving the car and not
really looking closely at the display.

Anybody know of a way to drive a stake through it's little heart?

Googling this revealed:

<http://gpsmagazine.com/2008/11/garmin_nuvi_265wt_review.php?page=11>

It appears the traffic feature is supplied on this model without a
subscription, but is supported by advertising instead.

ALL the reviewers are clearly paid by Garmin, because ALL of them at
the very least say they "don't mind" the "non-intrusive" advertisements,
they do not cover any substantial part of the map, and only go full
screen if you click on them.
Some go so far to claim "experts and users" don't mind the ads either.

It's linked to the traffic feature, so if you turn that off, you also
lose the ads.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, there is no payable subscription
option to enable traffic without the ads. You simply have no choice
with this model.

Short of reverse engineering the firmware, I don't think you're going
to have any luck here.

Garmin's site lists a Premium Traffic North America that may do the
trick (for $49.99). See

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?...0#accessoryTab

for details.
