Garmin Mapsource Install problem looking for disk 1?!

I just bought a Garmin GPS V Deluxe and was looking very forward to
getting it working tonight...well, not gonna happen.

I am installing Mapsource (City Select), and I follow the directions
exactly...to the point where the system reads "Searching for City
Select Disk 1". A dialog comes up asking me "Please insert City
Select Disk 1 and click Retry to continue the installation."

The documenatation states to click next when you get this message but
"next" isn't an option. I have "retry" and "cancel". When I click
retry the same message keeps coming up.

Garmin doesn't have any info about this problem on their web site and
their tech support line is closed.

I have two other CDs that came with the unit. It is City Select North
America v5. This set has two CD's.

I am not sure what exactly needs to be installed, but the docs read
START HERE and directs me to install the City Select V 2.01 Setup CD
first.

Do I need to bother with this disk at all?

Any advice appreciated.

Like it says, install it first.

I cannot install City Select V2.01. I get a message saying to "Insert
City Select Disk 1" and I try every single disk and none of them
satisfy the program. So I cannot install anything at all.

I've recently installed it on two laptops. Better call Garmin: May have
a bad CD.

i have had this occur before - if you move the dialog box out of the way you
will find there is a second dialog box behind that also wants you to click
on it. by doing so i have found that the first dialog box remains up and
onscreen for the balance of the install but everything works fine afterwards
so it looks like it's some strange dialog box thing...

It's possible you have a bad CD, or that your CD-ROM drive isn't able
to read it for some reason. If you have access to a CD burner, you
can try burning a copy of it and trying the install from the copy.
Or if your machine has another CD drive, try it in that one.

Cheers,

I had the same sort of thing happen during my install of City Navigator. I
tried a couple of more times until I got through it and got the second CD
read. Very aggravating! After all this, the application would not work.
Some Microsoft error message would pop up. Had to uninstall and reinstall
to finally get it going. I had e-mailed Garmin, and they pointed to
interference by a previously installed Mapsource application (Metroguide),
and gave me instructions to delete all Garmin files, and change the
registry. I did delete the Garmin files, but didn't want to muck around
with the registry, and it finally worked after the uninstall and reinstall.
Shouldn't have to be that hard!

Hmmm

Frgive me if I am wrong but some antivirus software can have this effect
too. Basically to eliminate consequences of the install activating or
re-activating antivirus software try this:

1 - put installation disk in drive

2 - scan it with antivirus software

3 - repeat for all CDs (you have 2?)

4 - switch antivirus software off

5 - start the install

I have heard that antivirus software is chruning away checking code while
digital stuff is flying from the CD. Buffers gat a little perturbed and a
sort of mixup follows on.

It - or similar effect - has happened to me. The above 5 steps worked and
have worked since then.

It does seem a bit of a faff but if the installation goes smooth it helps in
keeping stress levels down - my own anyway :-)

the bagal has landed

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I finally figured out what was
wrong. The volume name of the install CD was something like
"SETUP_CD". When I removed the setup cd and put in Disk 1, the
computer didn't recognize that I had changed CD's. The program was
looking for a CD with a volume label of "DISK 1" but my computer was
still reporting that "SETUP_CD" was still in the drive.

I removed all CD's and closed the drive and waited about 30 seconds.
Then I brough up Windows Explorer and hit F5 to refresh the drive
view. When Explorer reported that the volume name had changed, I
pressed the RETRY button and it recognized the CD.

I had to go through this song and dance 3 times since it wanted two
CDs and then wanted the first one again.

This was a major pain in the butt. I wish people would write software
to recognize a flag file or something on the CD rather than looking at
the volume label.

Anyway, thanks for all of the excellent suggestions. I now have this
thing working!!!
