Garmin lifetime subscription

I've just had my Garmin Edge 705 replaced under warranty (it leaked in
a heavy rain shower).

Garmin Australia tell me my Garmin Lifetime subscription is not valid
for this device & won't work. The fact that it HAS been working fine
for the last 9 months did not seem to change their minds on this.
Anyone heard anything about this?

Garmin Australia say that the Lifetime subs are ONLY valid for
motoring specific devices. Wonder how my GPS Map 60CSx has been
running updates all this time?

Can't get any sense out of anyone in Garmin Australia, and emails to
Garmin US refer me back to Garmin Aus.

Karen

In the US, I think the usual approach from Garmin is to transfer to the new
device if the replacement is from Garmin.

Yes, it's the same here. I think the guy on the hell desk had no idea
what he was on about ... he told me that according to his information
screen, I did have a lifetime subscription for the unit, but I'd never
used it once (I have, each update since purchase 11 months ago)

They did transfer the licences to the new unit, but only after I got a
bit sarky with him. No problems downloading the maps to the unit.
Now, if Garmin Australia could only give us accurate maps that show
all the bridges in our capital cities, I'll be happy

Glad to hear it eventually worked out.

You can always use free OpenStreetMap maps as an alternative.
And if a bridge is missing, you can add it yourself to the
master map at: www.osm.org

Free Australian routable OSM maps:
http://www.osmaustralia.org/garminroute.php Cycle path maps are
also available.

Buy a spare memory card to suit your Garmin, and put the OSM
maps on it.

Lots more background info here:
