Garmin iPhone Streetpilot App

Anyone using this app on their iPhone? I have been using it side by
side with my Nuvi3790t for about a month or so now. Looking to see if
I can use Streetpilot on my iPhone 4 and get rid of my Nuvi.

The problem is heat. I have tried two different iPhone 4's with the
same result. They don't like car dashes (at least not down here in
Texas). As soon as the sun comes through, the iPhone begins to heat
up and it shuts down the backlight which makes the display unreadible.

The NUVI can operate up to 140deg. The iPhone is works only into the
upper 90s.

I am sure its a heating issue since as soon as I take the phone off
the dash, it cools off and the backlight comes back on.

I am thinking the Otterbox case may have something to do with it (as
far as retaining heat) since to be water resistant,it has no slots for
air flow. Not sure if I want to keep taking the Otterbox off and not
yet ready to give it up totally.

I have seen a vendor selling a holder backed with a fan which may help
cooling but it is won't get as high as the dash - only a few inches
from the cigarette lighter.

Anyone using the Streetpilot App on the dash? What do you do about
the heating issue?

Joel

Use an air conditioned car would be one solution.

Are you really sure about that? My iPod Touch (same OS as an iPhone) has
"auto brightness" as its default setting, so moving in and out of direct
sunlight will change the backlight settings. What happens if you simply
shade the iPhone with your hand, or a piece of paper?

That makes the display darker, not brighter.

Get some white card stock printer paper from somewhere (you don't have
to buy a full ream). I do use some and I made a little tent for the GPS
and also my ScanGuage 2 which also sits on the dash. You just have to
cut out some spaces for the cables and use scotch for hold it together..
My car sits in the driveway with the full afternoon Sun beating through
the windshield and it never gets really hot. I also keep it on when
driving for the same reason.
From the front of the car, it doesn't look like something to steal,
rather it looks like some papers on the dash.

I don't use that particular program, nor do I use an iPhone, but
the problem occurs also with my Android phone.

One good solution seems to be to use a phone holder that clamps
on to a ventilation grille on the dashboard. This has several
advantages:

1. In summer, when you open the airflow, your phone gets cooled
very well.

2. The phone is in the right position in front of a dark
background, thus very good to see.

3. Unlike a suction cup windshield holder, the phone and the
holder do not block your sight.

A word of warning: Not every vent grille holder fits every car.
Have a return policy on hand if you find out that the one you
ordered does not fit.

Apart from that, I can only recommend these little devices
highly.

Interesting. But since the ready-made ones cost only a few $$,
it may not be worth the trouble, unless you're on a very tight
budget.

By the way, landscape orientation looks unfavorable to me, as
you want to see as far as possible ahead on the map, assuming
you have auto-rotation enabled, such that your car appears near
the lower edge and your driving direction is up on the map. With
north up, landscape orientation loses that disadvantage, but
still has no advantage.

Before you mount anything to the vent. Make sure the vent vanes are
thick enough to prevent them from breaking.
I had a cell phone mount for the vent and repeatedly installing and
uninstalling the phone from the mount broke the vanes.

Yes, handle with care. When the vanes are very thin and light,
they may not be suitable for such a smartphone holder.
