I recently trekked in Papua New Guinea with a mate who had an etrex. [I've
got an etrex venture].

Almost without exception he would get signal faster, and from more satelites
than I would.

My tracklog was virtually empty walking through the rainforest, while he had
patches of signal.

Why the difference.

[Note my gps was mounted on top of my pack. and his was inside the top of
his pack]

Comparisons were made with the GPS's off the packs in a hand held fashion.

- did you have WAAS enabled in your Venture?
- did you have the Venture set to battery save mode?

It's possible that your GPS is faulty.
Maybe a different firmware version would make a difference.
