Well, we would be guessing, as you haven't said what you were
comparing the GPS position to. Regardless, it's likely that what
you have wrong is the Datum. In many situations, unless you use
the same datum on the GPS that was used to make the map(or whatever
you are referencing), you're position won't "match up".
In the UK, you should probably be using the Ordnance Survey
Great Britian(OSGB) datum, not WGS84, particularly if you are
checking your position on OSGB maps.
