I bought the Mexico map ($70) but it was pretty much useless in Cabo
San Lucas. Even though Cabo has been a sizable resort for years,
TomTom's map source apparently doesn't cover it (google maps covers it
quite nicely BTW).

Without a way to check out a map in advance and no way to return an
unsatisfactory map, I won't be buying any more maps from them. I don't
see any way to register my dissatisfaction directly either, so my next
GPS will probably be from someone else.

Tom Tom would have to be operating under a rock not to know that there's
a newsgroup dedicated to them. If it were my company, I'd have someone
monitor it and try to do a better job. They are either poorly managed
or just don't care. It will show up in their bottom line soon enough.

I am using the rout planner on TomTom's web pile. I can clearly see
that there is no detailed street information for Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico.

Thank you for posting this. I will be cautious about buying maps from
TomTom in the future. However, the route planner is free.

I recently reached the same conclusion (S.Africa map).

In a GPS magazine review of map/route performance, TomTom came a poor
third after Magellan & Garmin.

There is a way of registering dissatisfaction, on the TomTom web
site, but they don't seem to understand customer relations.

They realise that so few read it that its completely irrelevant.

You dont know that they dont.

Or they have enough of a clue to realise that there will always be complaints about anything.

Nope, essentially because so few can work out the basics before buying
one of their products and there isnt any alternative that does a lot better.

Have fun finding anyone that does any better until someone
comes up with a GPS that uses google maps and which
has the advantages of a stand alone GPS as well.

You need to look harder.

And you will get the same result with them too.

Probably the best approach is to decide which standalone GPS
does it better in the areas you use much, which is no trivial exercise,
and have some way of using google maps in the field as well for
when the standalone GPS map isnt as good as the google map.

Thats perfectly possible now with the better PDAs and cellphones etc

Same main roads in the East London area are missing or tied to the
wrong town!
