I was lucky enough to pickup this unit for $100 new at
Target black Friday sale

Good unit so far .... but thinking I want/need a
friction bag mount.. I just don't trust the suction cup
mount on the window.

Any advice on which one to buy that doesn't cost almost
as much as my new gps unit?

If you are in UK try a branch of Lakeland or their on line store. They
have a bean-baggy thing that worked for me.

I got the exact same deal ($97+tax) at Target on the same day.
The next day I bought a "beanbag" support at Radio Shack for $26 (ouch!).
I had seen the mount on sale for $15 about a month earlier but didn't need
it then.

I trust it, just dont use it for other reasons.

The main reason is because the windscreen is too far away from the driver for me.

And the other reason is because I use it most for yard sales and
the stupid tomtom system means that with an itinerary, you have
to explicitly tell it to move on from each point in the itinerary as you
stop at each one, and its a lot easier to just pick up the tomtom and
do that than to reach too far to the tomtom on the windscreen mount.

I just use the dirt cheap friction mats that you get at the dime stores for $1 for 5
etc. Sit that on the dash and sit the tomtom on that. Mine is a 710 which sits very
well on a flat surface with the suction cup mount turned down to the dash.

You can get a mount that clips into the air vents on the front of the dash from tomtom,
but they will likely cost about as much as you paid for the tomtom itself unless you
can find a used one on ebay etc. And you may not like where the tomtom ends up either.

Yeah, I realised that you are in the US. The friction mats
are so light and thin they can be sent as letters so it it
doesnt cost much more than a local letter does to post.

Yeah, it always stays green here even in the dead of winter.
They are evergreen trees and we dont get any snow at all here.

It's my first, too, although I borrowed my daughter's Garmin 265W a couple
times.
I really like it. I use the "Susan" voice and it has good clarity.
I've learned you have to store things in an itinerary if you want to
repeatedly retrieve them later.
I set mine up so the data normally on the bottom is moved to the right side
of the screen. This gives more height to the display of the roads,
especially since I use the 2D map display.
The Radio Shack beanbag is quite heave and works OK without worry.
