FWIW: on morning show this morning ( Today show ? GMA ? I wasn't paying
attention) they had a consumer reporter talking about trends. She said for
GPS's they'll drop quickly and come with FREE map updates.
She said with smartphones and their built in GPS features no one has a need
to PURCHASE a standalone GPS and the manufacturers will be/ are now
discounting / updating features just to sell them.

This past November I had an opportunity to use my son's smart phone
with GPS app (we were in his vehicle) rather than my Garmin Nuvi 760
(which was in my vehicle). About the kindest thing I could say about
the situation is that I won't be getting rid of the Garmin anytime
soon. I'd sooner go back to a big old folded paper map than use his
GPS app on his smart phone. It was that bad.

Agree. I have a GPS app on my phone. Opened it once, closed it, and
I'm sticking with a real dedicated GPS.

I'm with you, but the TV show's point was - you HAVE a GPS and are used to
it. Most 20/30 something's use their phone for everything and consider a
purchase of a GPS to be a waste of money. Many don't have a watch either:
why , when it's on their phone ?
I have friends with factory GPS and it shows an arrow for their location and
the background map moves as the car does and they think it's great. If
that's what you're used to , a factory (in-dash) version might cost $1000.
The driver's phone "does the same thing as a GPS ", so they are not in the
market for a GPS.
Anyhow, the point was - you may find some deals so if you DO want a new
one, just watch the sales.

Actually, I agree with your point and didn't mean to contradict it. If
prices are going to fall, that's good for me.

For myself, since I'm used to using a standalone Garmin GPS, a smart
phone app wouldn't do it for me. My son, on the other hand, doesn't
see any problem with his phone app. It's all in the perspective.

The "maps" app on my iphone 4S is very good compared to my Nüvi 255W for
some things. But it isn't a real GPS. The 255W IMNSHO has still a
shitty gui, can't easily change a route as you can on either yahoo or
google maps, and doesn't even provide the minimal traffic info I get for
free on the iphone. Each has their pros and cons.

Plus the fact that in the near future when the NTSA gets their wish to
ban ALL forms of interactions with phones, it won't be legal for you to
be looking at a GPS screen on your phone while driving.

(I can't for the life of me understand any serious driver who sees a
full display on a standalone GPS (or even the built in ones which I
think are inferior) would think that a GPS on your phone can be a
reasonable replacement for a car GPS of either type. )

Then what makes you think it will be legal to look at (or interact in
any way with) your stand-alone GPSR?

Or your radio, CD player or passengers, for that matter.
