How does one avoid this, and can I manually restore the favorites?
(Using a TomTom One). I am very unimpressed with the TomTom Home
software.

"Favorites" are stored in file "mapsettings.cfg", in the map folder of your
TT device. If you did a full backup of your device, using Windows Explorer,
prior to the TTHome map update then copy "mapsettings.cfg" from your backup
to your new map folder. If you didn't do a backup first and the map update
was to the same folder as your previous map then your "Favorites" are lost.
The "mapsettings.cfg" file contains sundry other info such as "Recent
destinations"... and its format may change when a new map is issued, which
creates a problem.
I created a POI, called it "Favourites", gave it an icon and store all my
favorites there and copy "Favourites.ov2" (my favourites) and
"Favourites.bmp" (the associated icon) to the new map folder.
Windows Explorer must be set to NOT 'Hide extensions for known file types'
and setting 'Show hidden files and folders' could be useful BEFORE making a
full backup.

OK, thanks. I was stupid enough to backup immediately after I
installed the update. I will know next time.
