Google maps and possibly others are supposed to be able to download to the
tomtom. So far I have not been able to do this with my Go700. Does this only
work with the newer models or have I missed something.

Got to love google maps where you can drag any part of the route to
re-position it. The Go700 always seems to take me by way of the
super-highways. I like going sometimes the back roads to see America more
close-up. Short of entering a bunch of waypoints, is there any better way?

Thanks - Oppie

Havent tried it myself.

And it can be more up to date than the tomtom.

And rather easier to do itinerys with the graphic maps too, particularly
with yard sales where you only have a rough idea where each one is etc.

You can control that with the routing settings.

Yes, you can tell it to avoid the superhighways and can tell it to try
a different route when you dont like the one it initially chose too.

Even easier with itinerys, you select from a list of routing mechanisms.

Google maps is much more powerful tho.

http://houghi.org/tomtom/
I went through France that way http://houghi.org/france/

There will always be a difference between Google and TomTom as they use
different algioritms.

That looks interesting. I'll take a closer look at the program.

Hallo,

Have you also looked at gpsbabel. It can convert between many different
GPS file formats including TomTom-Itineries.

regards,
Vincent

That's one I really have to try!
A few manual steps to complete but interesting. I'm a nuts and bolts type
anyway

I looked at Tyre from janboersma and found it somewhat confusing. I really
wanted to work from the Google map directly and not explicitly have to put
in waypoints - just to drag the route where I wanted it and upload to tomtom
go700. Tyre works with a somewhat limited google map that does not seem to
be drag-able. Perhaps this is different with google earth, I haven't tried
that. For mobile use, I use a laptop with limited resources so didn't want
to load GE.

Thanks - Oppie

That is where the site does what you want. Select a start point and an
end point. Drag the route around. Select the 'email' option and paste
that into the site above.

Up comes a file that you can put on your Tomtom.

It does not work if you enter the waypoints yourself. Also the Tomtom
only can have a maximum of 50 points along the road, which I think is
not enough.

I wanted to have something that I could use online with only access to a
PC, which might not even be mine. e.g. some SD/USB card that I have in
it. I could walk into any cyber cafe with the card
(http://tinyurl.com/rkokt) go to the website and copy it.

I have not done it that way. I have done a trip trough France with it:
