Taking a driving trip to NZ with a fair bit of hiking along the way,
and would like to know whether I can just buy the Topo map and get all
the street info, or does the City Nav product have significantly more
roads and POIs?

This is for an eTrex HCx.

Thanks,

Gernot

Why don't you use the maps van OpenStreetMaps. They are free:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/
The language may be Dutch to you :-)

Different kind of POI. If you're wanting to know where every flooring
store and prosthetic limb manufacturer is, Topo probably won't be a huge
help. Topo's POI are more focused on trail heads and camp sites.

Grocery stores, gas stations, B&Bs and restaurants would suffice. So
for an outdoorsy trip by car and foot, would you recommend the Topo?

Thanks,

Actually, Dutch would be easier. If you could give me a 5 sentence
description of what I need, I'd really appreciate it. I have found my
way to cloudmade (http://downloads.cloudmade.com/oceania/
australia_and_new_zealand/new_zealand#downloads_breadcrumbs)

Do I just need the img.zip, or the poi.gpx.zip as well?

Thanks,

Gernot

I should add that I am on a Mac. I do have a PC Netbook if need be,
but if I can do this on a Mac I'd prefer it.

It includes a Mac-version. Just be quick. This link has a short lifetime.

I'd recommend both sets of maps, but you can PROBABLY get by with just
the Topo. There's a lot more POI in the newer version than there used to
be, so it may be enough for your purposes. Buy the Topo first, play with
it a bit first, then decide if you want/need the richer POI and more
accurate roads/routing that comes with CN. (Newer Topo does route on
most routing units, but it's free TIGER data instead of the more refined
stuff that the road products have.)

Since I'm a folk-dancer, both of those are of interest to me.

How did you know?

Thanks! Got them. Downloaded osm_routable_roadtrip.zip and
osm_routable_gmapsupp.zip. One last question: Double clicking on
the .gmapi file that osm_routable_roadtrip.zip unzips to launches
Garmin's MapManager and a little window asking whether to install the
map. If I click install, it seems to be installing, but where is it
installing to? When I open Roadtrip I don't see it. When I go to
import the map, the gmapsupp.img and the .gmapi files are grayed out,
indicating that Roadtrip doesn't understand them. How can I see this
map in Roadtrip?

Thanks for your help with these surely elementary questions.
