Is there a way to calculate the distance from one city to another even
though you are not in the originating city?

With a meter and a paper map.
Or, you can phone a guy living in the originating city.. ;o)

Which device are you using ?

With Tomtom, you can perform this with the "Plan itinerary" (A->B icon)
action, which will ask you for a starting point - which can be different
from your current GPS position.

Best regards,

Either "Prepare route" or "Itinerary planning".

If you also have a smart phone, there are apps available to do this.

Here's one for Android phones (two different web download sites where
you can also read about it):
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fettinger.wd
http://www.androlib.com/android.appl...er-wd-jnx.aspx

This is just info, not an endorsement. I have it, but rarely use it.

I have to add that I don't know the international ramifications, so I
can't be sure it's available to users in Portugal.

I generally use Google Maps to prepare my itineraries because they are
generally very near the results with my TomTom and very fast to modify.

For Europe you'd rather use
http://www.viamichelin.fr/ (see other languages option)
