Hi All,

I need to talk to someone in authority at Magellan about my CrossOver GPS.
A while back someone visting this list mentioned they had contact info for
someone with authority to make some stronger decisions. If that person
would be kind enough to relay that information, I would appreciate it. In
short, I have a GPS I paid twice the going rate for and it fails to work
properly even after a repair. I can be reached at tim dot lsr at shaw dot
ca.

Thanks for listening!
Tim

Well I don't have a contact, but what's the full story?

Why did you pay twice the value of the unit? How does it fail? What
was (unsuccessfully) repaired? And, why can't you just warranty it?

I purchased my CrossOver shortly after it came on the market in May of 2007.
I was looking for a GPS for my dual sport motorcycle, something that would
do both road navigation plus back road and trail mapping (topo). I bought
the CrossOver at that time for around $600 when the 2200 was selling for
about $350. Auto navigation worked fine, but in Outdoor mode I had some
weird results with tracks that I attributed to my inexperience plus my lack
of Canadian topo maps which were not available until a few months later. A
few more topo attempts yielded the same results, tracks were not consistent
with my travels. Specifically, in Outdoor or Marine mode, the CrossOver
will freeze, the GPS co-ordinates will freeze. If you go to the compass
rosetta screen, usually your speed and bearing will continue to be updated,
but your co-ordinates will lock. This would lock up like this for a random
amount of time, anything from a minute to fifteen or more. The only
consistent way to get the GPS back to normal was to go to auto mode and back
to Outdoor again, or turn the unit off/on.

I know this is a software issue as the unit is very stable and consistent in
auto mode, I am happy with that. In Outdoor mode, it is a hacked together
piece of software/hardware. Unfortunately I spent too much time
troubleshooting and trying to discover if this was a problem across the
board or if only I were affected, my warranty expired. Last week I
contacted Magellan support to see what it would cost to get repaired. To
their credit, they were fast to answer the phone and only charged me $20 for
a refurbished cross ship replacement. Unfortunately it still has the same
problem.

I've given up on the CrossOver for my outdoor and motorcycle needs, I will
get a Garmin 60 CSx. What will make me happy is if I can keep my original
CrossOver and the refurb. Then I will have to acceptable car GPS units, and
I can give one to the girlfriend.

In short, a Magellan CrossOver is a good auto navigator, but unusable as an
outdoor GPS.
